Candles FAQs

How does a candle work?

A candle is a fairly simple item. When a flame is touched to the wick, the heat melts any existing wax on the wick and burns. Once the wick has been lit, it melts more wax, which keeps the flame burning. The longer the wick burns the more wax it uses as fuel, until the candle is completely used up.

How old is the tradition of the wedding candle?

The practice of using a wedding candle is relatively new. By most accounts it is less than 50 years old and is most common in the United States.

How are fragrances added to candles?

Most fragrances used for candles come in the form of essential oils. These oils are mixed in varying amounts with the melted candle wax before being poured into the mold. As the candle burns, it releases the scent of these oils into the surrounding air.
