Questions & Answers

Q: Do Candles lose their fragrance if left uncovered?

A: Not good candles, at Makin' Scents we don't just top off our candles with scent. Our candles are scented throughout the candle, giving you that same great smell from the start to the finish.

Q: Why do some candles smell stronger than others?

A: Not all people's smellers work the same, and most importantly some fragrances are just stronger than others by nature. Example: peach is a very light scent and Black Cherry is a very heavy scent.

Q: Why do some candles fade or change colors?

A: Direct exposure to sunlight or high intensity lighting can cause fading. So never put candles in a window or directly expose them to direct lighting for a long period of time.

Q: What causes some candles to leave wax on the sides of the container?

A: The term for wax sticking to the sides of the container is wax hang up, the unburned wax left on the sides of your container reduces burn time and could finally melt and cause the wick to drown. Consider the following, perhaps you didn't burn your candle for the recommended amount of time (breaking in process) the first time you light it. Drafts or extreme room temperatures can cause uneven burn. The wick must always be kept centered. If a wick should ever move to one side while burning, extinguish candle, and reposition wick to the center. Also make sure your wick is centered each time you extinguish your candle.

Q: Why do some candles burn a hole down the middle?

A: Two possible problems, one you didn't burn your candle completely to the edge the first time you burnt it. Candles have a memory and they will burn in that same spot the next time you burn it, so always remember the very first time you burn a candle, let it liquefy all the way to the edge of the container. The second most common reason for a candle burning a hole down the middle would be improper wick size.

Q: What is the breaking in process of a candle?

A: The very first time you light your candle it needs to liquefy all the way to the edge of the container. Candles have a memory and they tend to burn the same each time you burn it. So if you light it, let it get a small melt pool (the little circle with liquid wax in it), extinguish, you have created a soft spot that your candle will remember to burn in next time you light it.

Q: What is the recommended amount of time to burn a candle?

A: One hour per inch (diameter) of your container. Example: if you have a 4 inch (diameter) container burn 4 hours.

Q: What is the best way to extinguish a candles flame?

A: Take a non-flammable instrument and dip the wick into the melted wax and then reposition your wick to the center. This will prevent smoking.

Q: Why do some candles tend to loose their fragrance after burning only a few hours?

A: At Makin' Scents we add scent to the entire candle, so we guarantee that your candle will smell the same from start to finish. If you have purchased a candle that smelt awesome in the store and brought it home to find it only smelt good a short time, this is because some companies only use scent in the topping off process of making candles this meaning you are only getting a small amount of wax in the top of your container that has been scented, the rest is just colored wax.

Q: What's the best way to trim a wick?

A: The most popular way is to use a pair of scissors. But, did you know that if you use a Kleenex and just twist it, it will break off and leave just the right amount needed!

Q: Why do some candle containers turn black on the inside?

A: Because you haven't kept the wick trimmed ;-)

Q: So if I forgot to keep my wick trimmed, how do I clean my nasty looking container?

A: Put it in your dish water (yes with the candle in it) and wash the container, shake excess water out and dry container, light your candle to pull excess moisture out of wick and enjoy.

Q: What is the proper length to keep your wick trimmed to?

A: ¼ inch, not only will it keep it from smoking. But it will also increase the burn time you get out of your candle.

Q: Why does my candle not fill my house with scent? I want the whole house to smell good?

A: You need to consider the room or house size when purchasing candles. Hint: large room, large candle, small room, small candle. Large house, several candles.
