Votive Candle
A votive candle is commonly used for religious ceremonies. Sometimes referred to as a “prayer candle”, they are used by several different Christian denominations. They are typically small in size and made from beeswax or paraffin.
A votive candle is often lit and placed on a religious alter as a prayer offering. In general, each lit candle on the alter represents a prayer from one person on behalf of another. This practice is very common within the Catholic Church, although other denominations have adopted it as well.
The term “votive candle” can also refer to any candle that is two inches tall by an inch and a half wide. These items are commonly found anywhere that sells candles. They are often placed inside a small glass cup and placed throughout the room.
