Wedding Candle

The wedding candle is a popular part of many wedding ceremonies, especially in the United States. Typically, the flame is lit by the combining of two separate candles. The bride and groom each touch the flame from their own candle to the wick of the wedding candle, signifying their union.

The wedding candle not only symbolizes the union of the bride and groom, but of their respective families as well. The candles for the bride and groom are lit by representatives from each family, which is meant to emblematize the love of each of the families. This love is then presented to the bride and groom who then use it to light the single unity candle.

The wedding candle part of the marriage ceremony is a relatively new addition. By most accounts, this practice only dates back about 40 years or so. It is most often practiced in Christian ceremonies.
